ELMO — On May 30, 2019 Evelyn Joseph left this world to be with her ancestors.

Evelyn was born in a tipi in West Fisher to Louis Caye Sr. and Lucille ‘Lucy” Tenas Caye. She was the 2nd daughter born and the 6th out of 15 kids overall.

Evelyn attended the Ursaline school in St. Ignatius, Montana for her primary education and then moved to Polson High School.

Evelyn met and married Darryl Joseph of Elmo. Together they raised six children together.

Evelyn was one of the happiest people you could ever meet and she always made everyone feel special about themselves. Her smile and laugh were infectious. Even when she had her own life to live if someone needed her, she was right there to help.

She was a prolific Indigenous artist and shared her craft with many. She was a constant fixture at The People’s Center and was never too busy to help out those who were learning. Many people around the country have beadwork that Evelyn has done. For many years she would bead and make all the Head Start moccasins for their yearly pow-wow.

Evelyn loved to travel with her mom, dad, and sisters. Once Darryl retired, he and Evelyn hit the road to wherever the wind took them.

Evelyn loved her family and friends to the fullest.  She will be greatly missed by everyone who knew her.

Evelyn is preceded in death by her parents, Louie and Lucy Caye, her sister Loraine Caye, her brother Alan Caye, and two sons Darren Joseph and Lenny Joseph.

She is survived by her husband Darryl Joseph, her children Melanie Joseph (Brian Mitchell), Dolores Joseph (Shawn Shourds), Yvonne Joseph, Darryl Joseph Jr., Kim Joseph, and Ed Stasso. Her grandchildren Simone Joseph, Xavier Joseph, Franchesca Finley (Isaac Shourds), Jacqueline Ness, Sonny Ness, Lucous Joseph, Shawnee Shourds, Melanie Shourds, Manny Shourds, and Rogue Kenmille. Great Grandkids- Darren Shourds and Gia Joseph; sisters- Monica Caye (James), Wanda Caye (Melvin), Joan Miller, Debbie Caye, Rosemary Caye and Marilyn Caye and her brothers- Jimmy Auld (Diane), Earl Auld (Darlene), Douglas Caye, Willie Caye, Jr. Caye (Gigi), and Art Caye (Kimberly); along with numerous nieces and nephews.

Services for Evelyn were held in Elmo starting on Saturday June 1, 2019, Rosary was Sunday June 2, 2019, and a funeral service on Monday, June 3, 2019, with burial at the Elmo Cemetery on Monday June 3, 2019.

There is a large hole in our hearts that can never be filled by another but we will live on with her memory, our stories of her, and all the love we have for her. Messages of condolences may be shared with the family online at www.thelakefuneralhomeandcremation.com. Arrangements are under the care of The Lake Funeral Home and Crematory.
