“Wags & Whiskers” fundraiser set for September 6

From Mission Valley Animal Shelter

POLSON — The Mission Valley Animal Shelter is holding its “Wags & Whiskers” fundraising event on Friday, September 6, from 5:30-9 pm at the Ronan Community Center. The dinner is being catered again this year by the Finley Point Grill which features a prime rib dinner. The largest annual fundraiser for MVAS is to raise funds for operations of the shelter. Tickets are $50 per person and a table may be reserved for $500, which includes a complimentary bottle of wine.

Sharon Hawke, Vice President of MVAS, explained that this is the third annual event which was previously called “Puppy Party.” She said that the community insisted that felines be given equal time. “It wasn’t that we were ignoring cats, it’s just that we previously were raising funds to expand our puppy areas.”

Bidding for the 10 live auction items, which include a Jamaica vacation, a custom Montana fire table, a summer fun package, a rifle, a chef-to-table package and a tire package, will begin at 7:30. In addition, there are numerous valuable silent auction items, raffles and a lot of door prizes. A dessert auction has been added to this year’s event.

According to Hawke, the event last year raised about $35,000 and about $30,000 the year before. Hawke added that it is crucial for shelter operations to keep growing this event as the organization’s budget this year is approaching half a million dollars. “Without community support of the shelter and our Seconds 2 Go thrift store, there would be no animal shelter in the area to help dogs and cats which makes a difference in the community pet overpopulation problem and increasing problems with stray dogs.”

“MVAS is essentially a no-kill shelter that will not euthanize an animal for lack of space,” explained Hawke. There is no official animal control in Lake County and MVAS is the only animal shelter between Kalispell and Missoula. “The numbers can be overwhelming but we remain committed to all dogs and cats needing help in finding homes.” The shelter relies on foster homes as well as transfers to other rescue groups when the shelter exceeds capacity.

Tickets for “Wags & Whiskers” are limited to 250. Call the shelter at 883-5312 to reserve yours and attend the event to find out all of the interesting innovations occurring at MVAS.
