HELENA — Long time readers and fans of Char-Koosta News now have access to issues from 1988 to 2014 online. The Montana Historical Society digitized CKN and added it to the previous online issues that have been available on their website at MontanaNewspapers.org.
In 2008, issues from 1956 to September 1988 were digitized through a collaborative effort by Salish Kootenai College’s D’Arcy McNickle Library and the University of Montana’s Maureen and Mike Mansfield Library. The collection later moved to the MHS’s online newspaper archive.
Earlier this year, CKN worked with MHS to get the broadsheet issues online. Unlike Char-Koosta News’ website, which has news articles from 2006 to current, the Montananewspapers.org website has complete newspapers – ads and all except for the minutes - up to December 25, 2014.
From 1956 to 1988, with a ten-year hiatus from 1961 to 1971, CKN was printed in an 8.5" by 11" ‘newsletter’ format. In October 1988, CKN switched to a standard newspaper broadsheet format still used today.
