PABLO — Starting fall 2019, Salish Kootenai College (SKC) will offer two new 1-year Certificate of Completion programs in the Office Professions Department. These programs are added to the existing three existing programs that include Office Assistant, Grant Projects Assistant, and Medical Office Clerk Certificates of Completion and an Associate Degree in Grants Projects Management. The Medical Office Clerk has been redesigned to focus on patient registration in healthcare facilities. 

Bookkeeping and Payroll is a new 1-year Certificate of Completion. Students will learn specific bookkeeping and payroll skills through courses in accounting basics, payroll accounting, bookkeeping, and employment law. Courses in computer applications such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access are included in the program. Students will also complete a practicum consisting of experience in a bookkeeping or payroll office. Students completing the Certificate of Completion are prepared for employment in entry-level payroll, accounting, or bookkeeping positions. Individuals currently working in these positions may take a smaller set of courses to obtain a workforce certification in Bookkeeping and Payroll. According to the Montana Department of Labor and Industry, individuals working in payroll and bookkeeping areas earn average salaries of between $35,640 and $39,680.

Medical Billing, Coding and Insurance is being offering as a new 1-year certificate of Completion that provides students with education and experience in this high-demand area. Students will gain skills and knowledge in specific courses geared towards healthcare industry, including medical terminology, legal and ethical issues, foundations in medical coding and billing, understanding of human disease, and basic computer application skills. Students completing the Certificate of Completion are prepared to take the national certification exams in medical billing and coding. This area of employment expected to increase both in Montana and nationally, with salaries averaging $32,000 to $39,500.
