PABLO – A joint investigation into the murder of William Patrick Conko Camel who was shot and killed in Sanders County near Dixon two years ago, has developed new leads. CSKT’s Tribal Law Enforcement is questioning two people of interest who are currently in custody on other charges. 

Camel died in 2018, but Sanders County announced a joint investigation with the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes earlier this month.

THOMPSON FALLS — Sometime around 11 p.m. on October 5, 2018 William Patrick Conko Camel was shot to death on Frank McClure Street in Agency, just North of Dixon, Sanders County. Sanders County was assisted in the initial investigation by the CSKT Tribal Police, the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, and the Montana Highway Patrol. Detective Martin Spring of the Sanders County Sheriff Department has conducted a thorough investigation despite the challenges presented by the circumstances of the case.

Although it is coming up on two years since the murder, the case remains an active and on-going homicide investigation. On July 16, 2020 Sanders County Detective Martin Spring reached out to Officials from the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes to request assistance with the investigation. CSKT Chief of Police Craige Couture has pledged that the Tribal Police will help in any way they can. Sanders County believes that working together with Tribal law enforcement will assist in the investigation.

Sanders County and the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes intend to pursue this investigation until the person or persons responsible for William Conko Camel’s murder are brought to justice.
