To The Tribal Membership:

This letter is to invite you to one of the Community Meetings scheduled to discuss the formation of a workgroup on Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG). This will be a collaborative, community-based effort to promote education and awareness of MMIWG and its correlation with domestic and sexual assault, runaways, drug activity and sex trafficking. The workgroup will focus on educational awareness, promote support for pending legislation regarding MMIWG and create a CSKT action plan for MMIW.

There are over 1662 cases of missing and murdered indigenous women and girls in the U.S. according to a MMIW database developed by researcher Annita Lucchesi. In Montana, the Department of Justice reports there are 72 missing cases and 22 of those are Native American. CSKT Law Enforcement continues to investigate two cases on the Flathead reservation.

According to the U.S. Department of Justice, Native American women are 2.5 time more likely to experience sexual assault, one in three Native women will be raped in her lifetime and murder is the third leading cause of death among Native American women.

The Tribal Council approved a resolution on January 8, 2019 to establish a workgroup to address the issue of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls. They are committed to promoting education and awareness of MMIWG and to collaborate with grassroots organizations and groups to address this important issue.

Please attend one of the following meetings if you’re interested in participating. We will explore goals, objectives, and the structure of the workgroup .
