POLSON — Falls are the number one cause of injury in the older population. Besides the injury itself, which can be serious, older people often then start to limit their mobility which can cause a cascading effect to their strength and overall health. Also, as we age it can be difficult to find ways to stay active. As our abilities become more limited, we may find that we are unable to do some of the things we used to enjoy staying active, and have a hard time finding replacement activities.
In order to provide an option for this stage in life, Area VI Agency on Aging will again in 2020 offer two 12-week sessions of Moving for Better Balance. We have the classes at the Polson Senior Center and offer a reduced rate for those who are senior center members. For those who are not members, the fee for the class includes a senior center membership.
The purpose of this class is to use an adapted Tai Ji Quan exercise program to help improve your balance, mobility, walking, and physical and mental well-being. You will learn a variety of movements from the traditional art of Tai Ji Quan which have been specifically tailored to train balance, self-awareness, and controlling body movements in performing various activities of daily life.
The other purpose of the class is to have a little fun while moving a bit.
Moving for Better Balance is recommended by the Administration for Community Living, the National Council on Aging, and the American Geriatric Society.
The class meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 10-11 AM. The winter session starts Tuesday, January 7 and runs for 12 weeks, finishing at the end of March. The spring session begins Tuesday, April 7 and runs for 12 weeks, finishing at the end of June. The charge is $35 for senior center members and $50 for non-members (we will pay the center for a membership for you).
