FLATHEAD REZ — Before I began covering girls basketball last century I never really paid it much attention. However, after a few games and getting to know some of the players I got gamed. It’s a different type of game they play but it is just as challenging, entertaining and emotional as the boys’ game in a slightly different way, strategically speaking. I was lucky to be enlightened from the coaching perspective by Mission’s Les Rice and Arlee’s Richard Bachmeier whom I dealt with personally. But most of all I was enlightened by the skill and passion that the gals I watched over the years. They got game too and it’s just as thrilling as the boys.

This coverage we’ll provide is a one-person game but we’re going to give it our best shot and provide as much coverage as one-person can the latter half of the season.

• The Arlee Scarlets (3-1, 5-3), who placed 2nd at the State C Tournament last season, began the New Year with a District 14-C conference win against the Noxon Red Devils (2-2, 6-3). And it was a thriller that went into over time before the Scarlets came away with the 37-35 victory that kept them in first place in Distict 14-C. Scarlet guard Emily Fiddler led the Scarlets with 11 points: Nellie Desjarlais and Noelle West each added six to the bottom line.

• The Two Eagle River Lady Eagles (0-4, 1-8) continue the search for a conference win after losing a couple to begin the New Year. They dropped a pair of road wars against 13-C Clark Fork in Superior and against St. Regis. Clark Fork (2-0, 6-0) topped the Lady Eagles 61-7 last Thursday, and the Lady Tigers of St. Regis (3-2, 5-4) beat TERS Saturday by a score of 61-9. Ce’Alana Shepard led the Eagles against Clark Fork with three points; Justina BigBeaver and Alexia Parizeau each chipped in a deuce. BigBeaver led TERS against St. Regis with four points; Shepard had three and Terae Carpenter had two points.

• The Lady Vikings of Charlo (3-2, 6-4) posted a 36-28 non-conference win of 13-C Seeley Swan Lady Blackhawks (1-1, 3-4) Friday. The Lady Vikings trailed at the half by a score of 20-16 but righted their ship by outscoring the Blackhawks 20-8 in the second half. Kaitlin Cox did the most damage with 17 points; Liev Smith and Tyrah Hammond each had five.

• The Hot Springs Lady Savage Heat (2-1, 4-3) split last week’s games by topping Noxon (2-2, 6-3) 39-34 Friday and falling to the Plains Trotters (1-2, 3-6) 52-36 Saturday. Sage Jackson led Hot Springs against Noxon with 11 points; McKennzie Cannon had eight and Stacy Gray had six. Sydney Jackson had 12 to lead the way against Plains; Gray had eight and Cannon six.

• The Mission Lady Bulldogs (0-3, 1-8) of District 6-B opened the New Year last Tuesday with a 58-39 loss to the Arlee Scarlets. That was followed by a 68-36 loss to Missoula Loyola (2-1. 5-2) Friday.

Louetta Conko-Camel led a well balanced Maiden’s attack with 13 points; Micalann McCrea jad 12, and Tiana Ulutoa 10. The Lady Pirates were led by Kaelyn Smith with seven points and Quinn Motichka with six.

• The Lady Pirates also lost the game against Columbia Falls (3-0, 8-2) Saturday by a score of 66-38. Kaelyn Smith led the Pirates with 20 points and Jaycee Freduinlund had nine.
