Terry Pitts and Leonard Gray appointed to the State Tribal Economic Development Commission

HELENA — The Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes Council members Terry Pitts and Leonard Gray have been appointed to the State Tribal Economic Development Commission (STEDC).

Montana Governor Steve Bullock made the announcement on Tuesday, August 12. He appointed Terry Pitts, CSKT Tribal Councilmember Dixon District Representative, and Leonard Gray, CSKT Tribal Councilmember Hot Springs District Representative, to be the CSKT Representatives on the State Tribal Economic Development Commission. Pitts will serve as the primary representative, and Gray will serve as the alternate.

Pitts and Gray have served on the commission before, their last term ended June 30, 2014.

The STEDC, under the Montana Department of Commerce, was established in the Native American Economic Development Act of 1999. This commission is tasked with assisting, promoting, developing, and providing initiative recommendations for accelerating economic development on the Reservations in the areas of business expansion, manufacturing, tourism, agriculture, and community development.

The goal of the commission, as stated, is to, “Work in a government-to-government relationship with tribal governments in Montana to expand and improve economic development opportunities for each of the eight tribal nations.”

Of the nineteen members that currently serve on the STEDC, three new members total have been appointed this year.

For now, the STEDC has not posted upcoming meeting for the commission.
