MVP unveils new payment options

PABLO – Local residents are now being offered new options when paying their monthly energy bill with Mission Valley Power Company (MVP).

In December 2012, MVP established pre-pay metering. Customers can pay a $10 connect fee and put $50 into their power account to begin. The usual $200 to $300 deposit is not required. When an account balance dips below $30 MVP sends out a reminder by phone or email letting the customer know to add money to the account. Ralph Goode, General Manager for MVP says, “the pay-as-you-go metering is still in the experimental stage, but we feel that it is another option that is making bill paying more convenient for our customers.” MVP currently has 23 accounts that use that option. Dalene Gardipe, MVP Customer Services Manager, says, “The key to the prepay metering is to help people avoid service interruptions, and the fees that go along with them.”

In June 2013, MVP offered online payments without signing up for an online account. Their website, www.missionvalleypower.org provides simple instructions for paying with a credit or debit card. MVP reminds their customers “you can make more than one payment a month, and you can pay ahead.”

An automated pay-by-phone option is available now. As long as a MVP customer has their account number handy, they can call 1-877-779-7947, 24 hours-seven days a week, to make a payment. Previously, if a customer wanted to make a payment by phone, they would have to call into the office, and only during business hours. Over 400 customers use the pay-by-phone option each month.

A big addition to the web payment option is the ‘Smart Hub’ recently introduced in February. The new option allows customers to go online using a smart phone, tablet, or computer to access their account information, make payments, and talk to MVP staff. If a customer goes to the MVP website, and clicks ‘pay online’, they can access the Smart Hub site. While there, customers can view their daily power usage, the high/low temperature for the day, their monthly average bill, their actual bill, their annual average, and make a payment. Goode says, “People are always concerned their power usage, and the Smart Hub is another great way for people to track their usage. There are less surprises when they get their bill, which I think makes it easier. We are always striving to make bill paying easier.”
