AIHEC tournament tips off Thursday at SKC, concludes Sunday with champs crowning
PABLO — It will be a hopping and hooping Frenetic February/March Madness showdown this week and weekend at the Dr. Joe McDonald Health and Wellness Center. Why, you may wonder. Wonder no more. Salish Kootenai College is the host site of the national 2014 American Indian Higher Education Consortium (AIHEC) men’s and women’s basketball tournaments. The winners get, among other things, the trophy plus year long bragging rights as the best American Indian tribal college hoopsters in Indian Country, aka America.
The Frenetic February pool play portion is set for Thursday, Feb. 27, and Friday, Feb. 28, and will determine the seeding for the single elimination March Madness portion that begins Saturday, March 1, and ends Sunday, March 2, with the championship games.
The Frenetic Frenzy pool play games will take place on two split courts and begin at 8 a.m. and end around 8 p.m.
The times of the March Madness tournament play to be determined based on pool play standings.
Juan Perez, Lady Bison coach, said there would be a total of 28 teams at the tournament. They will come from Montana, Minnesota, South Dakota, North Dakota, Arizona and Washington.
“There’s going to be a lot of basketball games this week at SKC,” Perez said, adding that there will be two divisions in each of the men’s and women’s tournament. Pool play will determine which teams play in what divisional bracket. The more successful teams will play in the higher division and less successful will face off in the lower division. “We want all the teams to have a realistic shot at a championship.”
