New benefits for the New Year from the Montana Tobacco Quit Line

By Diana Schwab, Tobacco prevention coordinator for Lake County

• Eight weeks of FREE nicotine replacement therapy while supplies last, reduced co-pay for Chantix and Bupropion.
• New Pregnancy and Postpartum program.
• The Montana Tobacco Quit Line helps smokers and smokeless tobacco users alike.
• Quit Line participants have a higher success rate than those who try to quit alone.

These free and reduced costs medications are offered just in time to support New Year’s resolutions to quit tobacco for good. Breathe easier, have food taste better, and save money.

Beginning January 1, the Montana Tobacco Quit Line will offer up to 8 weeks of free nicotine replacement therapy (gum, lozenges or the patch), up from the 6-week supply that was offered in the past. In addition, the Quit Line is also offering Chantix for $50 per month and Bupropion for $5 per month (for up to 3 months).

Area residents who ring in the New Year by resolving to quit tobacco can receive free help, including guidance from specialists who help each caller set a quit date, develop a personalized quit plan and participate in five proactive calls with a quit coach who will guide the individual through the quitting process.

There is also a program just for pregnant women. The Montana Tobacco quit Line Pregnancy and Postpartum Program will provide ongoing support with up to nine calls during pregnancy and after delivery. Free nicotine replacement therapies will be available with a prescription from their medical provider. Other benefits of this program include a small reward card for each completed call.

Quitting tobacco can be the most important thing you can do for your health. FDA has not approved smokeless tobacco or e-cigarettes as successful cessation devices. Use of these products may hamper your success of quitting tobacco

The Montana Tobacco Quit line is a free service available to smokers as well as individuals who use other tobacco products. Calling the quit line is toll-free, at 1-800-QUIT NOW (1-800-784-8669).
