SKC Childcare Center awarded scholarship

PABLO — Salish Kootenai College Childcare Center Director Joelfre Grant has been awarded a scholarship to attend the Tribal Early Childhood Research Center (TRC) Summer Institute at Johns Hopkins University in July. All costs for participation, including travel are covered by the award.

The TRC Summer Institute is a five-day, two credit course offering tribal early childhood program professionals the opportunity to “Explore methods and theoretical approaches to early childhood development and intervention research in tribal contexts; consider optimal systems of early childhood care in low resource settings; and to examine unique aspects of tribal research and culture, emphasizing the importance of community-based and community-engaged projects,” according to the TRC website.

Grant has worked as an Instructor in the Education and Psychology Departments at SKC for 11 years and served as the Director of the Childcare Center since December 2011. He is one of 15 scholarship recipients in the nation. Grant said that, “I’m excited to explore ways that I may perform research that is more accessible, useful, and meaningful for our tribal children and families.
