Celebrate Community Earth Day on Saturday, May 4
PABLO — Bring your bikes, strollers, good walking shoes, your children and appetite to the Joe McDonald Event Center (SKC’s campus) on Saturday, May 4 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., for a Community Earth Day/Bike Path Celebration. The event is being sponsored by a variety of nonprofit, health-promoting organizations, including Ronan Parks Department and Safe Routes to School, Salish Kootenai College Departments, Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes Health and Human Services, Kicking Horse Job Corps and Lake County’s Health Departments. While a few of the activities are centered in the parking lot of the event center, checkpoints will be set up along the HWY 93 bike/walking path going north and south from Ronan, Pablo and Polson. At each station, participants can receive a stamp in their “passport book.” Individuals who gather 3 stamps in their passport books from 3 different checkpoints are entitled to a complimentary “Made in Montana” lunch. The goal of this 5th annual event is “To provide a family-centered day that promotes healthy lifestyle behavior, positive family interactions and acknowledges the principles of Earth Day.”
Since Earth Day is April 22, the concept of Healthy Earth – Healthy Me will be promoted, including recycling bins at the Lake County Transfer Station and SKC and foods that come from homegrown, local producers. A few “recycled” bikes are being rounded up and will be given away on a first come, as needed the day of the event, there will also be bike parts and volunteers on hand to help with minor repairs or bicycle maintenance. A bicycle safety course will also be available so bicyclists can learn the basics of safe riding, including the importance of wearing a helmet. Because the goal of program sponsors is to encourage healthy choices and lifestyles, limited numbers of promotional items will be given away at the various checkpoints. Please remember to bring your own backpack, water bottle and wear your bike helmet.
So come on out to the bicycle pedestrian path along Highway 93 between Ronan, Pablo and Polson on Saturday, May 4 , between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. to learn about local programs efforts, goals and resources in promoting healthy choices, have fun while riding or walking along the path, and reward your efforts with a homegrown lunch with friends and family.
