Children's book by Adeline Mathias now available

PABLO — How a young brave survived by Adeline Mathias is a new children's book published by the Salish Kootenai College Press for the Kootenai Culture Committee. The book relates the true story of a young Kootenai man, alone and without supplies or tools, abandoned in the middle of hostile enemy territory on the Great Plains during the 18th century. Young Kootenai Indian warriors of that period learned early how to obtain food, shelter and clothing from the land around them.

The story was told by Adeline Mathias, the late Kootenai elder from Elmo, and is illustrated by Kootenai artists Francis Auld and Debbie Joseph. The book is written at the seventh reading level. The paperback book is 32 pages long and sells for $5. It can be ordered by mail from SKC Press, PO Box 70, Pablo, MT 59855. Prepayment is required on mail orders; please include $2 shipping for the first book plus, $.50 for each additional book. Books are also available at the SKC Bookstore and at the People's Center gift shop.
