The People's Center prepares for singer and social
PABLO — Fall season has arrived and with it comes socializing and
preparations for the upcoming winter season including visiting,
story-telling and drying wild game.
On Sunday, October 18, the People's Center welcomes actor,
singer Gary Farmer. Farmer founded and published "Aboriginal Voices," a
magazine devoted to Native Canadian issues.
Farmer attended Syracuse University and Ryerson Polytechnical University, studying photography and film production.
He comes from the Cayuga nation and Wolf Clan of the Haudenosaunee/Iroquois Confederacy.
He is well known for his roles in Powwow Highway, Skins, and Smoke Signals.
Farmer will be here at 1 p.m. to meet with area students and
discuss his career successes and answer questions. He and his band
"Gary Farmer and the Troublemakers" will perform an outdoor concert at
5pm. Please bring your own chairs.
His blues band consists of Farmer on harmonica and vocals, John
Longbow on bass, Robert Rambo on lead and rhythm guitars, Nicholas
Mendoza on lead and rhythm guitars and vocals, and Robert Dean on
drums.
On Monday, October 19, The People's Center will host their
annual "Dry Meat Social" here as well. For people who don't know how to
prepare meat for drying, can bring in their game and learn how to slice
and dry the meat. "This is also a time to get together and share
stories with tribal elders," says Marie Torosian, Educational Director.
