Cultural Connection and the Law 2008 seminar to be held August
POLSON — Cultural Connection and the Law 2008, a one-day seminar to
be held on August 5, 2008 at the KwaTaqNuk Resort, is the vision and
project of the late Chief Justice Joe Moran, Court of Appeals,
Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes of the Flathead Nation, who was
committed to making the CSKT Appellate Court a model of professionalism
and success. This program is partially funded by the Department of
Justice’s Edward Byrne Memorial State and Local Law Enforcement
Assistance Discretionary Grants Program. An outstanding program has
been put together, with a culturally and professionally diverse group
of speakers who combine bar, cultural and traditional components to
promote a better understanding of the tribal court system. For many
registrants, this will be their first experience hearing from the
respective cultural committees, as well as tribal lawyers and judges. Speakers
include James Park Taylor, Co-Director of the UM Maureen and Mike
Mansfield Center, Mansfield, Juries and Democracy Program; Ranald
McDonald, CSKT Tribal Legal Dept Managing Attorney; Craige Couture,
CSKT Chief of Police; CSKT Appellate Justices Greg Dupuis, Clayton
Matt, Chuck Wall and Wilmer Windham; Winona Tanner, CSKT Tribal Court
Chief Judge; Bob Stahl, CSKT Tribal Court Law Clerk; Ann Sherwood, CSKT
Tribal Defenders Office; Gary Acevedo, former CSKT Tribal Court Judge
