CSKT Historical Photo
Project seeks historic tribal photos
PABLO - The Confederated Salish and Kootenai
Tribes, the Institute of Museum and Library Services, and the National
Park Service have joined in a collaborative endeavor to create a
historical photograph exhibit pertaining to community histories of the
Flathead Indian Reservation. Photos are being collected from the
community for a large display that tells the story of the region.
The attached photo, which is on postcard stock, is
part of Clarence Hunter's collection. It shows a Pend d'Oreille hunting
party in tribal aboriginal territory before the reservation was opened
to homesteading in 1910. The photo was taken near the Little Thompson
River Area (near Thompson Falls). Left to right: Frank Sorrell, Julia
Sorrell, Antoinette Sorrell, Alphosine Sorrell (Clarence's
grandmother), Isadore Sorrell, (his grandfather). Seated in the wagon;
Theresa Alexander with child, Alex Alexander, circa 1900.
The photographer, who is unknown, wrote in the
lower left corner, "Off for the hunt Flathead Indian Reservation."
More pictures are needed. Photographs of the early
days of reservation communities may be submitted for consideration.
Signed releases forms are needed, and photos will be scanned and
returned. For more information, call Mary Jane at 675-2700, Ext. 1075.
She will answer questions and schedule a meeting with you in your home
or office. A series of community meetings will be held in the future.
