By Alyssa Kelly
Kicking Horse Job Corp. continues to help their students
further their education towards fulfilling careers. On September 20 the
program awarded four more graduates (among many) with diplomas for
completion in several programs. Graduates include the following:
Lanae Castro (Denver, CO): Certified Nurse Assistant and Medical Assistant.
Liselle White Grass (Browning, MT): Certified Nurse Assistant
Curtis Coleman (Flagstaff, AZ): Carpentry training
Alicia Garcia (Denver, CO): GED and Business Technology
CHARLO — "At Job Corp. you get a more hands-on
learning experience while you work on your vocational to further your
career," Alicia Garcia says as she wipes tears of accomplishment from
her eyes. Garcia's mother smiles as she watches her daughter with
pride.
18-year-old Garcia is an enrolled member of the Mountain
Ute Tribe in Denver, CO and she dropped out of high school as a
sophomore. "I was out of school for six months when my mom said 'you
need to do something," says Garcia. Through the help of a recruiter,
she joined Kicking Horse Job Corp. and it was just the opportunity she
was looking for.
During Garcia's 19-month stay on campus, she managed to
earn a General Equivalency Diploma and her Business Technology degree.
"The best part about being at Job Corp. was getting to meet people from
different races and tribes. It really helped me mature," she says.
On September 20, Garcia was among four of the graduates
at Job Corp. Her mother traveled by bus from Denver, CO to witness the
proud day. "I'm really happy I can make my mom proud," she says. In the
future, Garcia hopes to use her education by opening and managing her
own hair salon.
