Native American Awareness events are Sept. 19, 20
PABLO — This year’s Native American
Awareness activities will take place on Sept. 19 and 20 at The
People’s Center here.
This year, school children in grades 5 through 8 will participate, beginning with a general assembly at 9:30 a.m. in the arbor.
The agenda includes presenters from Philadelphia’s
Native Nations Dance Theatre, who will perform their program
“Keep the Spirit Alive.” They will also present skits,
music, dance and story telling.
During a lunch break, stations will be ready for the
student’s participation, including fry bread and dry meat
tasting, beading, mini-teepee decorating, clay sculpting, stick game,
hoop and dart, double ball and care and respect for native dance
outfits.
Students will be encouraged to choose the activities
they want to participate in when they sign up. Stations will rotate
every 30 minutes. Students are asked to bring their own lunches, which
they may eat in the arbor. There will be water stations and garbage
receptacles available.
Those interested in helping with the above stations are asked to call Marie or Lucy at 675-0160.
Coming up at the People’s Center is the annual Dry
Meat Social, set for Oct. 15 and 16. Participants are shown how to skin
deer and elk, and slice the meat to dry over the rack. They are asked
to register and bring their own lunches.
Also, November is Native American Heritage Month and The
People’s Center will host several activities, to be announced
soon.
