MISSOULA — Tribal member Jordan Hamel has made the University of Montana cheer squad and will be an alternate beginning this fall.

Raised in Missoula, Jordan was a Sentinel High School cheerleader for four years.

A U of M freshman this fall, she was among almost 40 other girls trying out for 12 cheer squad positions. The regular squad has six guys and six girls, she explained, adding that alternates end up cheering a lot.

"It's a pretty good deal," Jordan said.

She competed for four years as a gymnast - from seventh grade through 10th grade - then quit gymnastics to focus on cheer.

Jordan is not sure exactly what degree she'll pursue in college. She said she wants to go into pre-physical therapy, but noted that it's a Ph.D program requiring a seven-year degree.

She is sure, however, that her degree will end up being something in the medical field.

Jordan's parents are Shelly and Von Richter of Missoula, Jim Hamel of Ronan, and Jami Hamel of Arlee.

Her grandparents are Dennis and Celina Nault of Arlee, Cathy Hamel of Pablo, and the late Wayne Hamel.

Jordan's great grandmother is Oshanee Kenmille.
