'Coup Marks' group to market
reservation art
PABLO — COUP MARKS is an inter-tribal
organization
comprised of Native American artists and craftsmen living on the
Flathead Reservation.
The name COUP MARKS symbolizes the individual
artist's
mark on their work - in the same sense as the Plains Indian's historic
practice of counting coup (making their mark).
Major objectives of COUP MARKS include providing
marketing possibilities to reservation artists and craftsmen,
encouraging traditional arts and crafts products, and preserving
cultural traditions.
There are many talented and hard-working Indian
artists
here on the reservation who produce beautiful arts and crafts. It is
COUP MARKS' intention to provide a means of selling to a market willing
to appreciate those arts and crafts. Group members also believe that by
encouraging the productivity of Indian artists and crafts people, COUP
MARKS is helping to support traditional tribal ways.
For more information on the group, call Coup Marks
at 883-4317. Or, write to them at P.O.Box 491, Pablo MT 59855.
