River Honoring is May 7

FLATHEAD RIVER — It's early May, and that means it's River Honoring time once again.

This year's River Honoring begins Monday, May 7, at 6 p.m. along the river, with a public opening and free dinner. The gathering begins with an announcement of the 2007 River Honorees, followed by drumming and singing and a barbecue.

On May 8 and 9, nearly 1,000 fourth and fifth graders will travel from all across the Flathead Reservation to attend the River Honoring, listening to tribal and community resource specialists and educators from Tribal Fisheries, Tribal Wildlife, Tribal Wildland Recreation, Water Quality, Air Quality, Tribal Forestry Department, health officials, and Tribal Division of Fire.

Students learn about the river and its ecosystem, and also enjoy some Native American traditional games.

To attend the River Honoring, take Round Butte Road eight miles west of Ronan, and turn south on Moiese Valley Road. Drive six miles to the teepee camp educational stations along the Flathead River.
