Youth program completes
second summer
The Young Leader Expeditionary Institute has
completed its second summer of activities.
One very popular
activity offered by the Young Leader Expeditionary Institute is a float
on the scenic lower Flathead River (courtesy photo)
With Jesse Janssen and Chaney Bell as guides, the program served 15
young leaders (ages 8-16) from the Ronan and Pablo communities. More
than 30 expeditions were completed this summer throughout the
reservation, Western Montana, and other aboriginal territories.
The program focused on language and culture
promotion, identity, self-esteem, team building, and character
enrichment. The program was a complete success thanks in part to
program sponsors Kellogg Leadership for Community Change, Salish
Kootenai College, Salish/Kootenai Housing Authority, CS&KT-DHRD
Summer Youth Program, Ronan Telephone Company, and Wal-Mart of Polson.
A special, in-depth film is set to air on SKC-TV
on October 23, from 5 p.m-7 p.m. documenting the summer program
activities. Featured on the film are elders, camps, wildlife,
wilderness, pow-wows, young leaders, and many inspirational clips.
